These FES are capable of containing 100% of the primary emissions generated during the melting of raw material i.e. scrap. Around 1 kg to 3 kg dust per ton of scrap melting is being collected in pollution control device depending on the quality of the scrap. The performance of the FES depends on the raw material preparation and feeding practices as well as on the operation & maintenance of the air pollution control device. The SOPs regarding raw material and APCD are already being provided to the industry in the feasibility report as well as while issuing the completion certificate. Sometimes during the site visit, it has been observed that, industry is not filling the logbook of APCD genially. The Industry is always guided to Follow the SOPs during site visit. However, the problem of primary emissions would be there in case industry is not following SOPs sincerely.

The tapping time is 3-5 minutes per heat. Due to hot surface (1600°C) the dispersion of emissions in the shed area is fast and dispersion happens in all the directions of the atmosphere. Emissions from pouring/taping are usually uncontrolled. These emissions escape into the furnace shed and are vented through roof vents. The secondary emissions may be captured to some extent in an enclosed area either enclosing the plate form area or complete shed area. Dog house type hoods are used for covering the plate form area but this type of hood may not be installed in existing units due to space limitations. For enclosed shed area, a suction volume of around 2.5 to 3.5 lakh cubic meter is required for which an APCD will cost around 1.75 to 2.25 Cr. The cost of fabrication for enclosure of hood and civil work will be additional.
